Why Refer Clients to Horses for Healing LLC?
Horses teach individuals about self through instant feedback. During interactions with a horse (who can’t lie in their reactions) individuals project and transfer their issues onto the horse. The therapist facilitates interpretation of personal reflections and observations. This interaction increases present moment awareness which allows the individual to engage in the therapeutic process sooner than would otherwise be typical in traditional office settings. Individuals benefit from this equine experience when they find themselves “stuck” in the therapeutic process. Individuals who can’t connect with their part in maladaptive behaviors or relationships can accept feedback more readily from a horse than another human. Individuals who engage in repetitive dysfunctional behaviors, such as the person who repeatedly dates or marries an abusive partner, engages in projection with horses and witnesses their repetitive behaviors in the present moment as reflected back to them by a horse.

With maladaptive behaviors highlighted in the present, new decisions to change behaviors can be made and practiced in a non-threatening environment. Individuals who have experienced a form of abuse can learn to keep themselves safe in the presence of a huge animal like a horse. This is a metaphor for an individual to re-experience a time in their lives when they, or others, didn’t or were unable to keep them safe. Individuals regain confidence and personal power and control through E.A.T. Overall; individuals improve physical, social, emotional and cognitive functioning through E.A.T.
